He remembers their first meeting, the way his mind swelled with hope. She was lovely, smart, “everything”. But there was a recurring melody in her voice—a faint refrain about a past she claimed to leave for “freedom”.

“I was doing what he wanted,” she whispered then.

At the time, it sounded like a cry for help. Now, looking at the identical footprints leading away from his door, it sounds like a rehearsal. He is at a crossroads: one path leads to the safety of his own silence; the other leads into the dark architecture of her past.
